Located in the stunning Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, nestled between Hermanus and Caledon, this farm is embraced by the majestic Klein River Mountains. Surrounded by vast expanses of indigenous fynbos and rolling pastures, Glen Oakes provides not just a place to stay but also access to breathtaking Fynbos Trails that showcase the rich biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom. These trails offer awe-inspiring views, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying activities such as hiking or exploring on foot directly from their accommodation location.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN BEFORE, WE WILL BE DOING ALL DIFFERENT NEW TRAILS FROM OUR PREVIOUS VISIT, FOR THIS EXTENDED FARM FYNBOS RETREAT


This is an astonishing private camp site, which is quite rare, that ticks all the boxes so close to Cape Town. I have booked this venue again for the end of the year over the long weekend in December 2025. We will be doing difference trails from the ones that we did early in the year. I am looking forward to returning to this remarkable camp site, certainly one of my favourites so close to Cape Town. This Perfect for an end of year get away to wind down in a location that offers awesome fynbos Hiking, swimming, a shaded forest for campsite and stunning mountain views. It was also awesome to be able to wake up to sounds of birds, sheep and cows. This venue offers a proper farm experience, with a stunning fynbos trail from the Campsite.


Cost: R 1485.00 per person to secure your booking for this Private Group camp site. This will be a self-catering Private Campsite option, with shared communal lunch and dinner. Included in the payment will be your accommodation for the 4 x nights and the various guided activities on offer.


The venue offers an exclusive, uninterrupted camping experience tucked away in the corner of the farm, where the campsite is yours, and yours alone. There is also a dam for swimming near our campsite and a number of swimming spots along our trail. The farm is located 1h40min/ or 133km from Cape Town city Centre.

Our camp-site is located in a dense pine forest with lots of shade and great swimming spots, to enjoy the summer weather. This area has been on my bucket list to explore for a while, so it’s great to find a campsite in the area. The trails will also be starting from our campsite.


The highlight will be the Glen Oakes Farm Fynbos Hiking Trail. This trail will start from the camp-site and will follow the Hartebees River, up to the plateau. At the plateau, you will be able to see outstanding views of the Klein Rivier Vlei, Views of Stanford, Coastal Sea Views and views over towards Walker Bay Nature. The main trail will be 15.15km

There are flush toilets and hot showers. A boma area offers shelter from both wind and rain

The Glen Oakes Fynbos Trail offers a remarkable circular route that culminates at Boskop, providing hikers with breathtaking coastal views throughout the journey . Starting from the campsite nestled within the serene surroundings of Glen Oakes, this trail invites adventurers to embark on an unforgettable experience through some of South Africa's most beautiful natural landscapes.


As you set off from the campsite, the path initially leads towards Elands Draai, where the trail begins its gentle ascent. Following the meandering course of the Elandskloof River, hikers are treated to the soothing sounds of flowing water accompanied by the vibrant sights of indigenous flora. The trail then transitions into an undulating upward climb, gradually ascending toward Boskop, which stands as the highest point amidst the Kleinrivier Mountains


Upon reaching Boskop, your efforts will be rewarded with a stunning 360-degree panorama, offering the perfect setting for a leisurely lunch break. From the plateau, visitors can marvel at awe-inspiring vistas of the Klein Rivier Vlei, take in the charming town of Stanford below, enjoy sweeping coastal sea views, and gaze across towards the pristine expanse of Walker Bay Nature Reserve. These panoramic ocean vistas make Boskop Peak a highlight not only for its elevation but also for the spectacular scenery it provides.


This particular trail is renowned for seamlessly blending rugged fynbos landscapes—characteristic of the Cape Floral Kingdom—with tranquil pastoral farm views, creating a harmonious contrast between wild nature and cultivated land. The Fernkloof Trail via 3 Dams to Glenvarloch Forest is a captivating hiking experience that commences and concludes at the visitor center in Fernkloof Nature Reserve. This trail offers a harmonious blend of picturesque beauty, tranquility, and adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. The journey begins on the Green Route, encircling the base of Lemoenkop and gradually ascending through a clearly marked path leading to the Three Dams. As you traverse this portion of the hike, you will be surrounded by lush greenery and serenaded by the gentle sounds of nature along the Mossel River, enhancing the peaceful ambiance of the excursion.


Continuing along the river, the trail eventually leads to Glenvarloch Indigenous Forest, a distinctive and captivating section of Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Situated near Hermanus in the Western Cape province of South Africa, Glenvarloch Forest is a rare example of an Afromontane Forest, characterized by its dense canopy and diverse biodiversity. This type of forest thrives in cooler, wetter climates typically found at higher altitudes, providing a tranquil sanctuary for wildlife and nature enthusiasts alike. Here, hikers can take a break for lunch in the serene surroundings, with the option to cool off with a refreshing swim beneath the forest canopy, surrounded by towering indigenous trees and vibrant birdlife.


After relishing the tranquility of Glenvarloch Forest, the return journey guides you back to the visitor center via the Pipe Track, a route renowned for its unique charm and historical significance within Fern Kloof. The Pipe Track offers a different perspective of the reserve, allowing hikers to admire the diverse landscapes and ecosystems that make Fernkloof Nature Reserve a truly exceptional destination.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION


This trail commences at the Glen Oakes Camp Site, which is nestled within a serene setting surrounded by mountains, fynbos, and pasture lands. As you begin your journey, the path follows alongside the river that runs parallel to the campsite, gradually leading towards the mountain. This initial section of the trail provides a tranquil start with the soothing sounds of flowing water accompanying your steps. Upon reaching the river, you'll cross over it, marking the transition from the lower, more open areas into a denser environment as the trail ascends through a forested area.


Continuing upwards, the trail leads hikers through this wooded terrain until it reaches the plateau. Once atop, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views overlooking the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, known for its stunning landscapes and being home to several renowned wine estates. This vantage point not only showcases the natural beauty of the surrounding area but also provides an excellent opportunity for photography and enjoying a moment of peace amidst nature
