(STILLWATER, NJ – June 2025) – The Stillwater Collective is proud to announce its inaugural art exhibition, Stillwater Banksy and The Complaint Department, opening June 14, 2025. This provocative and enigmatic exhibition will mark the first public gathering at the newly designated Stillwater Collective, a reimagined cultural space rooted in history and poised for dialogue.
The exhibition features the work of an anonymous street artist, dubbed "Stillwater Banksy," whose guerrilla-style plywood portraits mysteriously appeared on trees throughout rural Sussex County in early 2024. Blending satire, social commentary, and a distinct local flavor, the works ignited both praise and controversy across social media and in local press, including a feature in Weird NJ Magazine (#63, Fall 2024).
Originally installed on roadside trees—sometimes on private property—these figures of animals and people provoked a unique kind of community reflection: Who are we when no one’s watching? What do we tolerate? What do we reject? And why? This curated installation at The Stillwater Collective presents the artist’s work in a new light—removed from nature, yet no less rooted in the environment that inspired it.
This exhibit also marks a symbolic shift for Stillwater, a rural township steeped in Revolutionary War history and agricultural legacy. With the newly approved resolution from the Zoning Board, The Stillwater Collective breathes new life into a historic building and ushers in a fresh cultural dialogue for the region.
