Pride Meadow Stewardship

Join The Freshkills Park Alliance and The Pride Center of Staten Island in our garden stewardship program! Volunteers will be helping with the garden planning and design process, garden development, and maintenance needs. Our first volunteer sessions' will be focused on weeding and tilling the ground in preparation for planting our native species.

Event & Accessibility Information:

• Walking distance from S44, S59, S61, and S62 bus stops

• Community service credits available for student volunteer work

• FKO Studio & Gallery has a gravel parking lot and street parking nearby

• Volunteers will be using handheld gardening tools to prepare the ground and plant native species. Gloves will be available, be prepared to get a little dirty!

• There will be bathrooms and a cool down area available, volunteers are encouraged to take breaks

• Volunteers will be working 2-3 hour shifts at their own pace in small groups, led and supervised by Freshkills staff

• The meadow area is behind our FKO Studio & Gallery and borders William T Davis Refuge. Bring sunscreen, bugspray, water, snacks, a hat, and comfortable clothes

• First sessions’ main focus will be on prepping the ground: tilling, loosening dirt, and weeding the area

• Next steps will be planting grown native species, followed by garden TLC & monitoring
