ShimmySTL: The Surprising History of Bellydance in St. Louis

This show is returning by popular demand — bigger, better, and in a larger theater (thanks to a grant from the Regional Arts Commission.)

This spellbinding show blends quirky documentary footage with dance performances to unveil the deep connections between our Midwestern city and a beautiful Middle Eastern dance.

Did you know:
• A belly dancer at the 1904 World’s Fair balanced a chair in her teeth while shimmying?
• A St. Louis woman opened a school for “Salome Dancers” in 1908?
• In the 1970s, bellydance was so popular in St. Louis that you could see a show at Famous Barr
• Channel 9, our local PBS station, produced a weekly TV show about belly dance
