The Hunter is a Butoh-inspired dance performance exploring the archetype of the hunter—one who stands as a guardian between civilisation and the untamed wild. Through the dual act of stalking and being stalked, hunter and prey become indistinguishable, blurring boundaries and roles. The piece becomes a visceral ritual, dissolving the human presence into stillness and shadow.
Premiered at Kallirois Theatre, Athens in 2024, The Hunter continues to evolve, seeking new contexts for its expression.
Butoh (舞踏), often called the Dance of Darkness, is a post-war Japanese avant-garde dance form. Emerging in the 1950s amidst cultural upheaval, Butoh challenged tradition and Western influence alike. Rooted in physical transformation and existential inquiry, it blends German Expressionism with Japanese body-based philosophy to explore identity beyond boundaries.
Yumino Seki is a Japanese dance artist and Butoh practitioner known for her site-specific, interdisciplinary works. Based in the UK and Europe, she has performed with Ten-Pen-Chii, Mama Dance Theatre (Germany), and Ariadne (France). Her projects in Hastings include HYAKKI YAKOU, MANJUSAKA, and GEKKA, all of which explore ritual, mythology, and transformation.
Yumino’s work spans dance, performance art, installation, film, and opera, and has been presented internationally at venues such as the Venice Biennale, National Gallery (London), Tramway (Glasgow), Art Gallery of Ontario (Canada), Dancehouse (Australia), and beyond.
