Following up on last month's sell-out Yazz Ahmed show, Dark Circles continue their monthly Crown House gatherings, with the rarest of treats - a performance by Dog Soup - their first in 16 years!
The brainchild of trumpeter and composer Robbie Robson, now a St Leonards resident of five years, Dog Soup was briefly part of the Loop Collective, a group of musicians founded in London in 2005. Dog Soup cut one mesmerising album of rhythmic shapes and melodic colours that still sounds fresh, exciting and dynamic 17 years later.
“The motivation,” says band leader Robbie Robson, “came about because I wanted it so you would not be able to tell what was improvised and what wasn’t. It’s always nice when something unexpected happens”
Released in 2008, Fragments just preceded the revitalised British jazz scene and slipped under the radar of even the most ardent aficionados, becoming a lost classic—until Dark Circles Recordings recognised its brilliance 17 years later and persuaded Robson to reissue it. With the reissue of Fragments, Dog Soup will not only reunite the fragments of their story but will also play live and this crucial chapter in British jazz can now be told again.
The now quintet consists of Robson on trumpet, John Turville on rhodes, Hans Koller on wurlitzer, Tim Giles
on drums, and Johnny Brierly on bass. This will be their first performance in 16 years and one not to miss, who knows how long you may have to wait for another one!
