Intro to Chainmaille - Japanese Flower Weave

In this class, Karen will be teaching you the history of chainmaille as it existed in the Middle Ages. You will learn the technique required to open and secure jump rings properly without damaging them to create a sturdy piece of wearable chainmaille .

The Japanese chainmaille family of weaves is likely the oldest traced back at least 3000 years ago. We'll start out with a simple pair of Japanese flower earrings and graduate to making a bracelet. Perfect flowers that never require any water!

You'll leave class having learned a foundational chainmaille weave while also learning about its historic importance. And don't forget the pair of earrings and bracelet made entirely by you. Chainmaille is about symmetry so think of it as battle crochet or Medieval knitting.

Prerequisite: None. This weave (unlike Byzantine from earlier classes) uses 2 sizes of Jump rings to create the pattern. The smallest rings are ⅛” in diameter. The larger are ¼”.

Materials: You will be supplied with the 2 sizes of Jump rings to weave the pattern. Findings are stainless steel lobster clasp for the bracelet and stainless steel lever backs for the earrings. All tools will be provided as well.
