Veja is a Croatian ethno/world music ensemble that performs traditional Istrian music in contemporary arrangements, blending cultural heritage with creative musical expression. Their uniqueness lies in the use of traditional instruments from various parts of the world – from the Istrian mih and Slavonian bagpipes, to the kaval, gusle, accordion, and guitar, as well as more modern instruments such as bass guitar, djembe, and cajón.
The band takes its name from an old Istrian custom called *veja* – an overnight wake held for the deceased, which often turned into a gathering filled with storytelling, song, and a deep sense of togetherness. According to legend, during their very first rehearsal, an elderly listener smiled and said, “Guys, you sound like a *veja*.” That moment — when the spirit of the past connected with a fresh musical energy — sealed both the name and the direction of the band.
Veja has performed on numerous stages across Europe, bringing Istrian musical heritage to new audiences through a fresh, authentic, and deeply emotional sound. Their music doesn’t preserve tradition in its original form alone – it revives it, transforms it, and carries it forward with respect, passion, and creative freedom.
