History Talk: The Southwell Dragon - Dr Christine Rauer

Join us at Southwell Minster in the grand State Chamber on 19th May for an afternoon of dragons, history and heritage with Dr Christine Rauer, University of Andrews.

Join guest speaker, Dr Christine Rauer, as she delves into interpreting medieval ornamentation and symbolism which can be hard for us modern people. This talk will try to get at the various interpretations that dragon imagery held in the Middle Ages. What does the dragon image on the tympanum say about Southwell in particular, and its medieval history? What emotions might a picture of a dragon have been associated with, and what groups of people and what types of stories?


Tickets are strictly limited and cost £8 (plus booking fee).

About the speaker

Dr Christine Rauer - School of English
Dr Christine Rauer specialises in early medieval literature, working for the University of St Andrews. She recently participated in the All Saints event at Southwell Minster organised by Dr Henry Parkes of the University of Nottingham. During that event, she had the happy opportunity to revisit the famous St Michael tympanum in the Minster’s north transept, which she had first researched some 30 years ago, as part of a book publication on early medieval dragons. (C. Rauer, Beowulf and the Dragon: Parallels and Analogues [Cambridge: Boydell and Brewer, 2000])
