About the event

Walking Jane Austen's Winchester to Celebrate Her 250th B*rthday

Join us for a delightful stroll through the charming streets of Winchester on the a*niversary of Jane Austen's death on 18 July 1817.


You will be taken on a journey through the history and hidden gems of this beautiful town. Sprinkled with readings from Jane Austen's novels as well as passages from her letters and prayers you can discover more about Winchester and the time that Jane spent here.


This is an exclusive tour that is limited to 10 people, and we will meet at 11:45am for a 12 noon start.


Tour highlights:

  • Winchester College where Jane's nephews went to school
  • Dr Gabell's garden that Jane enjoyed from her window
  • See inside 8 College Street (closed to the public and tickets now sold out) and see where Jane spent the last weeks of her life
  • See where Mr Austen bought his notebooks and who taught Jane to play the piano
  • Walk the Close to see where Jane stayed when visiting her friends
  • See Jane’s personal treasures and items she made now held in t
  • Winchester Cathedral and Jane Austen's grave where she is laid to rest.


All presented with notes and quotes from Jane Austen's novels and letters.


**Your ticket includes the house entry fee (£16/$20) into 8 College Street (tickets now sold out) and entry into Winchester City Museum. It does not include entry into Winchester Cathedral.


We will meet at Guildhall Tourist Information at the bottom of the High Street, so lace up your walking shoes and get ready to explore!


Your tour guide is Emma Darlington who has studied Jane Austen for many years, been a Chawton volunteer, and hosted many walks and talks. She has published five books including Jane Austen's Prayers, the first time they have appeared in print.


This walk will take around 2-2.5 hours (depending on how long is spent at each stop) and is mainly on the flat so is classed as easy. You will be sent a confirmation email and clear instructions upon booking.
