If Scream deconstructed the slasher template, I Know What You Did Last Summer showed you can still squeeze plenty of chills out of dogged adherence to the formula: Gather a bunch of pretty young actors and pick them off one-by-one with sadistic glee. And the actors don’t come much prettier than this absolute who’s-who of ’90s heartthrobs: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe, and of course Jennifer Love Hewitt. On July 4, 1996, four friends driving on an isolated road smash their car into a mysterious figure that seems to emerge from nowhere, and they make a pact that will change their lives for the bloodier. A box-office smash in its day, IKWYDLS spawned two sequels as well as a brand-new reboot, but the original hook-hand slash-’em-up will always have a place in our hearts as one of the most purely fun horror flicks of the ’90s, the perfect movie to enjoy while lazing in your kiddie pool as Bevo’s annual bootleg fireworks display explodes overhead!
