Teach MI History: The Fight for Inclusive Education in Michigan

Education shapes how students understand the world and their place in it—but for too long Michigan’s K-12 social studies curriculum has failed to reflect the full history of the many communities that built our state. The Teach MI History legislation aims to change that by ensuring that the histories of Black Indigenous Asian American & Pacific Islander Latinx Jewish Middle Eastern North African and Chaldean communities are taught in every Michigan classroom. This workshop is presented by Rising Voices.

In this session we will explore:

  • The gaps in Michigan’s current curriculum and their impact on students.
  • The goals and key components of the Teach MI History legislation.
  • How community members educators and advocates can take action to support inclusive education.

Join us for an engaging discussion on why representation in education matters and how we can collectively work to pass this historic legislation.

Our Presenter for this event is Henry Duong from Rising Voices.

Rising Voices is a nonprofit organization that organizes and develops the leadership of Asian American women (cis trans gender non-conforming and femme-identifying) families and young people for power around progressive values and policy in the state of Michigan.
