Join us on this guided group walk around Shoreburs Greenway, led by guardian of the greenway, Maria.
Maria has looked after this area for over 20 years. Maria’s efforts in litter picking and invasive species eradication have made our greenway the beautiful and welcoming place it is today. This event is our chance to hear about and celebrate her hard work, get to know Shoreburs, and discover more about the simple daily actions we can all take to collectively care for our local green spaces.
This walk will take us on a circular section of Shoreburs behind Mayfield Park, located on the boundary between Weston / Woolston / Sholing. It follows what has become affectionately known as Maria’s brook, a waterway that leads down to the Itchen estuary. This is a beautiful area rich in biodiversity, with lots to see and take in - you’ll forget you’re in the city entirely!
Highlights:
- Hear Maria’s story, and the variety of surprising and sometimes haunting stories about the greenway.
- Explore the beautiful greenway, including a paddle in the brook if you’re wearing your wellies!
- An opportunity to spot a variety of species. This time of year you may spot stag beetles, dragonflies, or even a more elusive kingfisher or roe deer. This area is also renowned throughout the city for a vibrant butterfly and moth population this time of year.
- Optional post-walk cuppa at Mayfield Nurseries Café.
Good to know:
- No need to book, just turn up!
- The route is approximately 2 miles, however we will be approaching it slowly to stop to chat and take in the environment, aiming to take approximately 1.5 hours.
- This is a mostly pathed (gravel/rubble) route, however there are some uneven surfaces, steps and inclines / declines which may be unsuitable for wheelchair users or others of impaired mobility.
- All ages welcome, though children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.
- Well behaved dogs are welcome.
