About this Event

Description: Join us for a day of learning and networking at the Building Resilience Among International Early Career Researchers event, open to early career researchers in social sciences. Postgraduates, PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers, particularly those from international and minoritised backgrounds, are welcomed! This in-person event will take place on Fri May 23 2025 at 10:00 AM in Building 100, University of Southampton. You'll have the opportunity to connect with fellow early career researchers from around the world and gain valuable insights on how to navigate the challenges of academic life. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to build resilience and grow your professional network!

Roundtable: Navigating Precarity as an International BAME ECR

Info: This roundtable discussion offers a platform for sharing experiences related to navigating the precarity in the UK’s academia, such as job security, funding availability, and institutional support. Five international ECRs in the social sciences at various academic roles will be invited to the roundtable discussion.

Panel: Global Academic Markets: Challenges in East Asia, Europe, North America

Info: This panel will delve into diverse academic landscapes, covering local requirements, cultural expectations, market saturation, and qualification recognition, preparing ECRs for global opportunities. Three international ECRs working in the academia from these regions will be invited to share their experiences.

Workshop: Building Support Networks & Mentorship

Info: Participants will share their personal experiences and challenges faced in academia in groups, and then will be encouraged to express their specific needs for support they believe would be most beneficial for their career advancement. Two senior researchers will moderate an open Q&A session, providing constructive feedback and guidance based on the issues raised. The workshop will conclude with an informal networking activity. This session aims to empower ECRs by connecting them with potential mentors and collaborators, while also informing faculty support strategies.
