Historic Lighthouses of Casco Bay

Join photographer & author Jeremy D’Entremont at the Main Library on Wednesday, May 28th at 6pm for a presentation on the colorful history of six Casco Bay light stations.

The days of traditional lighthouse keepers may be over with the advent of modern technology, but the lives of the keepers still fascinate us. This presentation will focus on the colorful history of six Casco Bay light stations: Portland Head, Cape Elizabeth (Two Light), Portland Breakwater (Bug Light), Spring Point Ledge, Ram Island Ledge, and Halfway Rock. You’ll learn about the Strout family dynasty of keepers at Portland Head, Marcus Hanna’s celebrated rescue at the Two Lights, the Holbrook family’s memories of life at Bug Light, the isolation of keepers at Ram Island Ledge and Halfway Rock, the famed decoy carving keeper at Spring Point Ledge, and much more. Also discussed will be the present day preservation efforts of the nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and private individuals who serve as modern day keepers.

Jeremy D’Entremont has been photographing and writing about lighthouses for four decades. He is the author of more than 20 books and hundreds of articles on lighthouses and maritime history, and he has appeared on Public Television and other local and national TV and radio. He is the historian for the U.S. Lighthouse Society and hosts the Society’s podcast, “Light Hearted.” He is a past president of the American Lighthouse Foundation and founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses in New Hampshire. Jeremy always emphasizes the human stories of lighthouse keepers and their families in his writing and presentations.
