WSM's popular end-of-summer tradition continues Saturday, August 23, 2025 when we proudly present our 15th annual Silent Movie Under the Stars under the night sky at the Upper Entrance to Robert Treman State Park at sundown – around 8pm -- in partnership with NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation.
This year we’re excited to feature "The Eagle" (1925) on the big screen starring the inimitable Rudolph Valentino, alongside co-stars Vilma Banky and Louise Dresser. Directed by Clarence Brown, the film sparkles with action and romance.
"The Eagle" was adapted from the 1841 novel Dubrovsky by Alexander Pushkin. An uncredited Gary Cooper plays a masked Cossack in the film. The plot centers on a lieutenant (Valentino) in the Russian army who catches the eye of the Czarina Catherine II. When he rebuffs her advances and flees, she puts out a warrant for his arrest -- dead or alive.
Plot twists cause the lieutenant to don a mask and become an outlaw -- the Black Eagle. The Black Eagle character does not exist in Pushkin's novel, but was introduced into the film, apparently inspired by Douglas Fairbanks' swashbuckling performance as Zorro in "The Mask of Zorro" which WSM showed at last year's Silent Movie Under the Stars.
"The Eagle" screens with live original music by The Djangoners: Harry Aceto, Bobby Henrie, Eric Aceto, and Brian Williams.
Bring a picnic, lawn chair, and sweater and join us for this cinematic evening under the night sky at Upper Robert Treman State Park. Come early and explore the trails and sights of the park. The film rolls on a large inflatable screen just around sundown -- 8pm. The screening is FREE and open to everyone. A $5 parking fee at Upper Treman supports the screening. Rain date is Sunday, August 24th.
