=== Broad Gauge Journey ===
Illustrated talk by Rev Canon Brian Arman
*** PLEASE NOTE new earlier start time of 19:15. ***
Tonight's Broad Gauge Journey starts at the Great Western Railway's original Paddington station, opened with the first part of the line, to Taplow, in 1838, and covers the route of "Brunel's Billiard Table" through Reading, Didcot, and on to Swindon. Slough will of course feature, laying claim to several historical railway milestones, despite not having an actual station for another two years!
The Reverend Canon (one 'n'!) Brian Arman is the editor of The Broad Gauge Society's magazine, and President of The Railway Correspondence & Travel Society. He has written a number of publications about Brunel's broad gauge railways, and himself comes from a long family line of railway employees working for the GWR since Swindon works opened in the mid-1800s.
Photo: An early photo (1850's) of Slough Station, showing the unique early GWR practice of having both Up and Down station platforms on the same side of the line. The Down Train Shed is in the foreground, with the Up Train Shed behind, on the London side of the station.
