This course is for those interested in designing ecologically sustainable land-based systems, whether that is a residential property and landscape, or an organic or regenerative farming system. If you are interested in designing and building any system that at its core it based on ecological principles and the restoration of the natural world, you will benefit from this course!
Primary areas of focus for this course will be learning about the following systems and how to apply them generally at the home-scale and beyond, from apartments to acres:
• Introduction to Permaculture & Ecological Design
• Organic Gardening & Regenerative Food Systems
• Ecological Landscapes & Non-Human Integration
• Soil Building & Composting Systems
• Rainwater Harvesting & Water Management
• True Sustainability (Simplicity, Degrowth & Beyond)
This course will meet in-person on five Saturdays from 10am-2:30pm (30 minute lunch) at Pine Hollow Arboretum in Slingerlands, New York. There will be assigned homework (reading, drafting, writing, reflections) and lectures to watch between sessions. The assignments and video lectures between sessions will require around 2-3 hours of time commitment per week. This course will total 20 hours of in-person study/discussion/activities/etc., and 8-12 hours of work to be done on one's own time. The primary project will be either a 2D drafting and design exercise of a chosen location or site, or a narrative format writing project with goals and design considerations to achieve those goals.
Important to note, the schedule will not be 5 Saturdays in a row it will go as follows:
• 1st Week: Saturday Class (10/5/2024)
• 2nd Week: Saturday Class (10/12/2024)
• 3rd Week: OFF/NO CLASS
• 4th Week: Saturday Class (10/26/2024)
• 5th Week: Saturday Class (11/2/2024)
• 6th Week: OFF/NO CLASS
• 7th Week: Saturday Class (11/16/2024)
