£70, 16yrs+
What will I learn?
Participants will learn how to design, make, finish, and care for a traditional hooky rug, including how to choose suitable fabrics and prepare them for use. The workshop focuses on using recycled textiles, such as old clothes, to create beautiful, functional rugs or wall hangings.
As you work on your own pieces, you will hear about the rich history of rug making, with stories, books, photographs, and examples; including the legacy of Winifred’s rug making in Cumbria. The session includes live demonstrations using a rug frame, a collection of vintage tools, books by leading rug makers, and personal works (including a few learning mistakes!) to inspire and guide the process.
What will I take away with me?
You will leave with your hooky rug to finish unless your rug is very small!
Additional Information
At the end of the workshop you’ll be offered to be part of a whatsapp group so people can compare how they are getting on, and stay in touch if they like.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
There’s no need to bring anything, all materials are provided; including hessian, a wide range of fabrics, and a hook to use during the workshop. If you’d like to bring something personal, feel free - some participants choose to make memory rugs using clothing from loved ones.
Optional Purchase:
A variety of rug hooks will be available to try during the session, and you’ll have the option to purchase one at the end of the day for £10—completely optional, with no pressure to buy.
Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes. All are welcome.
