Supporters of the Murray County Historical Society will remember the fanfare around the Dinehart Bears returning to the home. We are pleased to announce that the MCHS has recently returned another original carving back to the home.
Recently the Murray County Historical Society was approached by an individual who had in their possession an original piece of woodwork from the Dinehart Holt House. Specifically, they were in possession of a “hunt board” that hung in the house. They were interested in selling the piece to the historical society but wanted to move quickly. The MCHS board agreed to offer a $1000 down payment and take possession immediately, if we were able to fundraise the remaining $3,500 and make the final payment withing a year and six months, which they agreed to.
The piece in question was a had carved “hunt board” purchased either at or shortly after the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The fair hosted one of the first American exhibitions of Black Forest carvings, and business card from the fair, advertising carvings from Brienz, Switzerland, home of world-famous carvers, was found in Dinehart’s diary. The Dineharts owned several other carvings, including the staircase bears and a second hunt board.
To celebrate this remarkable and beautiful carving returning to the community and to help fundraise for the remaining owed amount, we will be hosting an open house at the Dinehart Holt House during the fair! Stop by the house Thursday August 14th from 3-7pm during the Murray County Fair and learn about the history of the family, the house, and help us preserve Murray County history!
This year, all proceeds from the annual Murray County Historical Society Summer Raffle will go towards retaining the carving. Raffle tickets are $10 a ticket, with 33 chances to win. Prizes range from a signed Minnesota Twins photo, a Jackpot Junction hotel stay, and plenty of gift certificates to local businesses. Tickets can be purchased from now until August 15th at the museum or from any MCHS board member.
