About the event

WILD MOVES: CHOREOGRAPHIC LINEAGES AND CREATIVE TOOLS
UNLOCK YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL THROUGH MOVEMENT
In this series of movement classes and hands-on workshops, Wild Moves invites you to connect with your body in new and intuitive ways. Come explore how movement can open up new avenues of creative expression, while also serving as a language of self-discovery. Through practical exercises, case studies and reflective discussions, each session reveals fresh insights into what it means for a performer to sense, feel, and move with purpose.

Whether you’re experienced or just beginning, Wild Moves meets you where you are and supports you in developing your own toolkit of physical theatre and choreographic skills. In this collaborative environment, individuals of all dance experience levels can build creative habits that will last a lifetime, while discovering new ways to move, think and express themselves as artists.

PROGRAMME DETAILS
Spanning seven weeks, Wild Moves requires no prior experience in dance, movement, or theatre – only a genuine interest in choreography, physical theatre, or performance. This course is recommended for individuals aged 18 and above.

CHOREOGRAPHIC LINEAGES AND CREATIVE TOOLS (25 AUGUST TO 6 OCTOBER 2025)
Participants will deepen their choreographic thinking and expand their movement vocabulary through the study of influential makers and methods. Drawing from a range of 20th- and 21st-century choreographers, Choreographic Lineages and Creative Tools, led by Edith Podesta, offers a practical and conceptual toolkit for navigating composition, improvisation, and the act of making performance.

Participants will get to know the work of renowned choreographers such as “Jonathan Burrows”, who offers tools to navigate the overwhelming choices faced by choreographers; “Mary Overlie”, who applies Horizontal (deconstructive) and Vertical (integrative) practices for performance-making; “Doris Humphrey”, who posits the choreographer as a maker of meanings in establishing the foundations of choreographic composition; and “Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker”, whose seminal book, A Choreographer’s Score, offers insights into investigating music, mathematics, geometry, and the architecture of movement. There will also be a special session with guest lecturer Dr. Stephanie Burridge, who introduces The Choreographic Notebook – a hands-on approach to generating ideas, applying choreographic tools, and documenting creative processes through scoring and reflection.

GUEST LECTURE BIO:
Dr. Stephanie Burridge trained at the Laban Centre (UK), and holds a BA in Anthropology/Art History, as well as a PhD in Contemporary Dance from the London Contemporary Dance School in association with the University of Kent. As Artistic Director of Canberra Dance Theatre (1978–2001), she commissioned many of Australia’s leading choreographers, composers, and visual artists. She was awarded the first Choreographic Fellowship and, more recently, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Australian Choreographic Centre. A leading authority on Asian dance, she has edited several key anthologies on dance and movement, including Celebrating Dance in Asia and the Pacific, The Routledge Companion to Dance in Asia and the Pacific, and Perspectives on Dance, Young People and Change. In 2022, she co-authored Routledge Choreography: The Basics.
