I,ŚETEṈ E TŦE ĆESE ŚX̱ENÁṈs TEṈEW̱ – Walking In Two Worlds

This 2024 feature documentary chronicles over 50 years of the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board’s history (formerly the Saanich Indian School Board). Building upon the late Philip Paul’s 1990 documentary, originally produced by the Saanich Indian School Board, it traces the evolution of Indigenous education from the era of the Tsartlip Indian Day School to the present, celebrating the achievements of the wishes and dreams of the Elders. The film tells the story of the W̱SÁNEĆ community’s commitment to supporting their children in learning the SENĆOŦEN language and W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge systems through an education rooted in their values.

In the early 1970s, following the guidance of Elders and the call for “Indian Control of Indian Education,” the community replaced the existing Day school with one of the first Indigenous-run school boards in Canada. This shift was a response to the colonial school system, which aimed to erase Indigenous identity, and reflected a determination to take back control over their children’s education. The W̱SÁNEĆ School Board was created to support children in learning within a system grounded in W̱SÁNEĆ language, culture, and values, rather than one designed to disconnect them from who they are.
