Voices of Nicaea: A Concert of Ancient Music

A rare opportunity to experience a once-in-a-lifetime musical event, bringing the forgotten sounds of early and Medieval Christianity back to life.

Centuries old chants – silenced for almost a millennia – will be heard again for the very first time in the modern era.

The concert will feature liturgical works spanning centuries and traditions, including world premiere recitals of 11th to 14th-century compositions discovered in the library of the 6th century St Catherine’s Monastery, on Mount Sinai, Egypt.

The concert brings together two exceptional ensembles – the internationally-acclaimed Chronos Ensemble and the beloved UK-based Mosaic Choir.

The event is part of the Nicaea 2025 festival, in Shrewsbury, marking the worldwide celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, held in 325AD, a pivotal event in the history of Christianity.

The programme will include rare Byzantine chants, the earliest notated versions of the famous Nicene Creed and the meticulously transcribed rediscovered chants of St Catherine’s Monastery.

Compositions of European Medieval music from British sources will also be performed for the first time in centuries.
