Join Pauline Rutter in a poetic walk exploring ideas of our relationships to the coast and the flow of bodies of water such as the river Adur. This will be a calm and gently paced walk with breaks. Along the way, we will allow the elements, our senses and shared poetic reflections, to reveal the connections between ourselves, the coast and even marine life.
What do we feel close to the edge? What past relationships do we hold as memories of being near water. How do we reflect on the fragility of our precious coastal ecosystems that have changed so much? This is an opportunity to explore, histories, heritage and connections through experimenting with words and/or sketches.
Participants will be invited to walk and share ideas and to use the several short poetic exercises as prompts for wider imaginative reflection. No previous experience required.
Who is this for? This workshop is open to everyone over the age of 13.
What to bring? Please come with a bottle of water suncream, and a snack. The Pollinator café at the Old Fort sells drinks and a selection of cakes and cookies. (The Pollinator café – Forthaven, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5HY) We will have our break here.
Writing materials will be provided.

About Downs To The Sea Programme
Writing Our Legacy is pleased to be part of a three-year nature programme called Downs to the Sea, which focuses on recovery and resilience in wetland habitats, funded with a £1.7m grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for activities from 2025 to 2027.
Downs to the Sea brings together a partnership comprising the South Downs National Park Trust, South Downs National Park Authority, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Western Sussex Rivers Trust (formerly known as Arun and Rother Rivers Trust), Brighton and Hove City Council, and Writing Our Legacy.
The partnership focuses on the two following strands:
Water in the landscape, focused on restoring and improving vital wetlands, ponds and rivers, and increasing the landscape’s resilience to climate change and other threats;
Water in people’s lives, focused on connecting people to natural heritage and the water in their lives, to benefit their health and wellbeing, to develop skills and knowledge, and to help protect precious freshwater resources that are vital to our communities.
