To truly touch the soul of rave, one must first listen — deeply — to Black music and the culture it emerges from.
In a world constantly being reloaded, OIL invites you this June to return — in the purest form — to the very roots of the rave rhythm.
We proudly present 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗻, founding member of Black Rave Culture (BRC) and a cornerstone of East Coast underground electronic music.
Born in Kenya and raised in the U.S., Nativesun is a driving force in Washington D.C.’s underground — a sonic architect connecting Black ancestral grooves with the grammar of the modern club. For nearly a decade, he’s carved out his unique frequency in D.C.’s nightlife, bridging worlds as both a DJ and cultural instigator. As a core member of Black Rave Culture (BRC), he’s helped define the city’s forward-thinking dance sound — and connected it to global conversations around identity, movement, and memory.
Nativesun’s musical language knows no stylistic boundaries. Through a potent blend of Footwork, Amapiano, UK Funky, and Techno, he crafts deeply rhythmic, culturally grounded sets. Every bass drop echoes with ancestral pulse; every percussive flurry is a spark of diasporic energy — whether in D.C. basements or London warehouses, Boiler Room floors or Brooklyn rooftops.
His understanding of the club extends beyond BPMs: he reads the dancefloor with surgical precision and brings diasporic stories to the surface with every transition. This sensibility has led him to global stages like Coachella, Afropunk, Bonnaroo, Dweller Festival, and Movement Detroit, where he’s shared lineups with Kelela, DJ Lag, Ari Lennox, Carl Craig, and Omar-S.
With acclaimed sets for Rinse France, Dummy Mix, Future Times, and Haus of Altr, Nativesun continues to shape the conversation — rhythmically and culturally — around what it means to rave with purpose.
