The next Sheffield Stoics Reading Group will take place on Monday 2 March, 18:15-19:15, Thackeray Room, St Mary's Community Hall, Howard Road, Walkley, Sheffield S6 3RX.
Arrive 18:00 for 18:15 start.
In the reading group you'll meet meet others interested in Stoicism, read about Stoic ideas and discuss them in an informal and friendly environment. We’re currently reading a short and very accesible introduction to Stoicism: Lessons in Stoicism by John Sellars.
This month we'll carry on reading Chapter 5, about Our Place in Nature.
No previous experience is necessary but to get the most out of the meeting we would recommend that you read Chapter 5 beforehand. If you have not attended any meetings before, you may also like to read Chapters 1-4.
What is Stoicism?
Stoicism is a philosophy that originated in ancient Greece but is still practised today. It emphasises rationality and excellence of character, while seeing all people as part of an interconnected community. By distinguishing what is in our power (our thoughts, judgments and actions) and what is not (external events, luck and circumstances), and cultivating virtues like wisdom, justice, courage and moderation, we can achieve emotional resilience and inner peace. It's a practical guide for navigating life's challenges with tranquility.
