Cherokee Ranch Science Institute offers 3 unique Teacher Professional Development SCIENCE Days - June 3, 10, 17 free admission.
Join experienced teachers and guides for exciting 7-hours of learning at Cherokee Ranch. Hike to archaeological sites and enjoy spectacular mountaintop views and visit Cherokee Castle and explore it's land. Meet other educators and collaborate to design lessons integrating your learning. Each participant will receive access to a folder of detailed information on the geology, paleontology, and archaeology at Cherokee Ranch.
SESSION 1 - TUES. JUNE 3: Teaching with the Outdoor Landscapes of Colorado
SESSION 2 - TUES. JUNE 10: Integrated Social Studies and Science exploration of human settlement in Douglas County over the past 10,000 years
SESSION 3 - TUES. JUNE 17: Using Concept-Mapping and Visual Representations to teach Social Studies and Science (Session details below.)
Participants should be prepared for learning in a rustic cabin as well walking on ranch trails, with some hiking to more remote areas. Bring the following items: Lunch / water bottle/ hiking shoes/ Sunscreen/ Hat/Phone / Camera / Laptop.
Location: Cherokee Ranch, 6113 Danielβs Park Road, Sedalia CO. Once you enter the gate, travel 2.2 miles to Cherokee Castle. Follow signs to the picnic house where classes meet.

Advance registration required along with a signed land liability waiver which will be provided. A modest $2 processing fee is collected to offset software fees. Please select session date(s) you wish to attend. A confirmation email will follow.
SESSION 1 - TUES. JUNE 3: Teaching with the Outdoor Landscapes of Colorado - This class is designed to introduce teachers to the landscape and climate of Colorado. Learn about basic Front Range geology and our wonderful unpredictable weather. Great for any teacher new to this area or anyone who wants to learn more about Colorado landscapes and how to share them with students.
SESSION 2 - TUES. JUNE 10: Integrated Social Studies and Science exploration of human settlement in Douglas County over the past 10,000 years- This class explores how humans have used natural resources through time. We will visit archaeologic sites and learn how scientists use evidence to reconstruct prehistoric settlements on Cherokee Ranch. We will focus on the changes that have occurred in how humans have used the land and resources over the last 200 years.
SESSION 3 - TUES. JUNE 17: Using Concept-Mapping and Visual Representations to teach Social Studies and Science- In this class we explore the value of using visual representations in student learning. We will look at how to construct concept maps and flow charts that support student understanding. You will construct a concept map to summarize your learning at Cherokee Ranch and share your insights with other teachers.
