~About the Class~
Contact Improvisation Class: Root Circle with Jun-Jun Li
In this session, we explore the theme of Root Circle—the cyclical connection between grounding and relationship, center and periphery, stillness and movement. Rooting into the floor through the feet, spine, and breath, we’ll tune into the gravitational support beneath us. From this rooted base, we expand into the circular—the spirals, curves, and arcs that define so much of Contact Improvisation.
We’ll begin by cultivating awareness in the solo body, drawing attention to our contact points with the floor and the continuous loop between surrendering weight and finding lift. As we connect with partners, we’ll investigate how circles form between bodies—how shared centers, rolling points of contact, and mutual support allow for momentum and transformation.
This class welcomes dancers of all levels and encourages deep listening, shared risk, and playful investigation. Come ready to root down, spiral out, and discover the quiet strength of moving in circles.

hOw: As a consummate crate-digger his days are spent down the rabbit-holes of sound, constantly discovering emerging talent and the hidden gems of sonic possibility. With an ear for the exotic and a background in movement arts, his approach is through the emotive keyhole of the psyche, while unlocking the heart of the dancefloor community. As a percussionist who’s adventured extensively throughout the near and far east, his mixes span all tempos and all genres of electronic dance music. His selections are drenched in global idioms, accented with tribal motifs, and interwoven with relentlessly intoxicating rhythm and groove.
