Wood Carving from an Indigenous Perspective

In this workshop, we will be learning about the carving process, including processing wood rounds, creating designs, selecting tools, and working with wood. We will also touch on the wide range Indigenous carving traditions and communities.

Jennifer Angaiak Wood an artist of Yup'ik, Irish and Italian descent, and was born and raised in Fairbanks, AK. Jennifer started carving masks in high school, and has been largely self taught. She uses her art as a way to connect with her Yup'ik heritage and bring a little bit of Yup'ik history into the modern world.

Know Before You Go -

• This workshop is intended for Indigenous artists and community members.
• Lunch and supplies will be provided.
• Adults and teenagers are welcome, younger learners will be considered on a case by case basis. Lunch and supplies will be provided.
• Please only register if you can attend both full days - there will be lots of breaks.
• We recommend wearing comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty, possibly long sleeve shirts with sleeves to protect forearms.
• If you would like to carve cultural designs, we ask that you do research ahead of time to learn your ancestor's specific styles, and only adapt patterns you have a personal familial connection to.
