About the event

History at Night: Birds of the Texas Coast
Please join us in our season premiere of History at Night for "Birds of the Texas Coast" immediately following the Friends of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site Annual Meeting at 6pm on Thursday, September 25th!

Join photographer Ron Grimes and author B.C. Robison as they discuss their new book, "Birds of the Texas Coast: Photographs." This program is free of charge and light refreshments will be provided. Any free-will donations will support our program sponsor, the Friends of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site.

Birds of the Texas Coast: Photographs is the first large-format photography work covering the entire Lone Star coast and its representative bird life. Through Ron Grimes’s dramatic photography of more than 200 coastal species, this book encompasses a deep and wide natural history of the region.

B. C. Robison wrote the “Texas Naturalist” column for The Houston Post and is the author of Birds of Houston (Rice University Press, 1990) and A Haven in the Sun: Five Stories of Bird life and Its Future on the Texas Coast (Texas Tech University Press, 2020). He received the 1986 Environmental Reporting Award from the Houston Sierra Club for his series of articles in the Post on the Wallisville Dam controversy. He attended the University of St. Thomas, Texas A & M, and Rice University, and had careers in veterinary medicine and environmental consulting. Born and raised in Houston, B. C. presently lives in Katy with his cats Toby and Ollie.

Ron Grimes is a native of East Texas. After graduating from high school in Woodville he attended the University of Houston earning a BS and MS in Civil Engineering. He worked for Houston area environmental consulting firms as a professional engineer for 40 years. In the late 70s Ron’s wife gave him a Canon AT-1 35mm film camera as an anniversary present. From there, he quickly developed an interest in landscape and natural history photography that has remained his primary subject. Ron has provided numerous photography programs for churches, civic groups and nature clubs. He currently lives in Fulshear with his wife Linda and their cat Jake. Always armed with a camera, he and Linda enjoy traveling throughout Texas and to the many public lands of the western states.
