About the event

Nature Walk and Bioblitz at the Coal and Coke Trail
Connect with nature and contribute to science at the same time! This program presented by West Overton Village and Jacobs Creek Watershed Association will include a tutorial of the citizen science app iNaturalist, followed by a guided walk at the Coal and Coke Trail.

We will start at West Overton Village with a classroom tutorial on how to use iNaturalist. Take a picture of your observation (like a plant or animal), upload your observation to the app, and fellow naturalists will help identify what you found. What’s more, by recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research-quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature.

Then, we will head over to the Coal and Coke Trail (entrance on Mildred Street) just down the road from West Overton. Enjoy a guided nature walk and practice documenting species in iNaturalist.

We recommend downloading the iNaturalist app and making an account before the program.

Plan Your Visit

The first part of this program will be held in the Museum classroom at West Overton Village. Accessing the classroom requires stairs and we are currently fundraising for an elevator.

After the classroom portion, attendees will drive over to the Coal and Coke Trail (entrance on Mildred Street) for the guided nature walk. Here are directions from West Overton to the Coal and Coke Trail: https://maps.app.goo.gl/29waZmw9QRvLDbSm9

This educational program is part of our Restoring Native Plants and Historic Gardens initiative. Restoring Native Plants and Historic Gardens at West Overton Village and Museum was financed in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program Environmental Stewardship Fund under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation administered through the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s Laurel Highlands Mini Grant Program.
