The 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test, when the United States successfully demonstrated an atomic bomb in 1945, will occur on July 16 this year. How was this monumental and fearsome moment achieved? We often speak of J. Robert Oppenheimer as the "father of the atomic bomb," just as we call Albert Einstein the "father of relativity." There is something powerfully arresting in the idea of the lone, great genius who accomplished such singular tasks. But, according to the National Park Service historians who maintain the Los Alamos site, there were more than 500,000 people involved in some way in the Manhattan Project! Focusing on just major scientific researchers, there were dozens of celebrated figures such as Hans Bethe, Vannevar Bush, Enrico Fermi, Richard Feynman, Ernest Orlando Lawrence, Leó Szilárd, and Edward Teller.
Join local historian Brian Brown for a look at some of these scientific figures, every bit as crucial as Oppenheimer (and some arguably more so!), as well as the politicians who launched the Manhattan Project in the first place. There will be time for questions after the lecture.
