The Raleigh Township Centennial Museum opened in 1967 as part of the township's Centennial celebrations, with a mission to collect, preserve, and display artifacts related to the Elgin (Buxton) Settlement. Its focus is on the settlement’s history from its founding in 1849 through the late 19th century, along with ongoing research into the personal histories and genealogies of the original settlers and their descendants. The Buxton Settlement was a terminus of the Underground Railroad, with an approximate 2000 freedom seekers who resided in the Settlement in 1851.
Renamed the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum in 1998, the museum continues to serve the people of Kent County and Southwestern Ontario. It attracts visitors and researchers from across Canada and the United States, offering a unique look at the history of the Elgin (Buxton) Settlement and its impact on the local community.
