Author and filmmaker Rae Shaw reads from and discusses her new book, The SHORT: Writing Tools To Free the Imagination.
The Short is a new book that visits the process of filmmaking and screenwriting through the lens of self discovery. Unlike many filmmaking books that approach the process through adhering to rigid structures, trendy topics, or popular templates, Shaw encourages the writer-filmmaker to consider using personal tools to develop a short film that is unique and impactful: a personal totem, a meaningful theme, a unique perspective.
Shaw uses examples from her many years of teaching as well as personal life experiences to convey some of the vehicles and tools that can contribute to a making a short that is universally impactful and feels authentic to an audience. In a world where millions of shorts are being made every year, this question of how to make a short film that rises above the masses becomes ever more urgent.
Sharing new concepts such as emotional potency, personal themes, and ode to the three ones shoot, Shaw explores how to create and build provocative work that will help new filmmakers and writers launch a career from short media creation.
Books will be available for purchase and the author will sign books following her talk. In addition to readings, the first 20 attendees to sign up and show up on the day will receive a free bookmark.
