Santa Fe Community College
6401 Richards Avenue, Santa Fe, United States
This year we're visiting the Santa Fe Community College Controlled Environment Agriculture facility, developing sustainable growing systems using hydroponics and aquaponics, as well as Desert Verde Farm, New Mexico's first commercial aquaponics farm producing fresh and nutritious food locally grown for the Santa Fe community.
The purpose of the Santa Fe Community College CEA program is to revitalize agricultural traditions and develop sustainable growing systems, methods and practices in controlled environment greenhouses using aquaponics and hydroponics that support local food systems and security, and promote economic development through food innovation and entrepreneurship in a manner that is ecologically, economically and culturally viable, socially just, sustainable, and regenerative for current and future generations.
Desert Verde Farm, New Mexico's first and only indoor aquaponics farm, is devoted to addressing the food crisis in Northern New Mexico. By selling primarily to schools and food banks, clients can improve the freshness and nutritional content of their food. Desert Verde currently produces 4,000 heads of lettuce, spinach, bok choi, and culinary herbs each week.
