Identifying Birds by Sight & Sound with Josiah Lavender

Learning to distinguish between a variety of birds in your backyard is perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of birdwatching. However, the sheer diversity of birds in SF is overwhelming, making it difficult to know where to start. Flipping through a field guide may only make bird ID seem more insurmountable, as the pages reveal a suite of puzzlingly similar-looking species. With the correct approach, though, identifying birds by both sight & sound can become much less daunting. In this workshop (in-store lecture followed by a guided bird walk) Josiah will present a simplified, holistic approach to bird identification that focuses on key features such as size & shape, color pattern & habitat to separate species. He will also provide a foundation for learning sound identification, often considered the most rewarding but also more challenging aspect of bird ID.
