ABOUT THE BOOK
Expanding on the bestselling Campfire Stories volumes, which feature shareable tales from our national parks, this new series from Ilyssa and Dave Kyu immerses readers in the storytelling endemic to America’s beloved natural spaces, offering unique tours through diverse histories, lore, and landscapes.
Part story collection and part travel companion, each eye-catching volume begins with an anthology of "campfire stories"--from classic passages to original poetry, historical excerpts to fresh perspectives, treasured folk songs to local myths. Through the magic of storytelling, readers are deeply drawn into each distinctive terrain. These tales are then followed by a mini-guide: community-sourced recommendations for outdoor activities, cultural landmarks, and historical points of interest that will enrich the reader’s experience, as well as tips on how to best travel lightly and respectfully through these scenic and varied public lands.
ABOUT ILYSSA & DAVE KYU
Ilyssa Kyu is a design researcher and strategist with a degree in industrial design. Her previous work at boutique and global design studios helped to inform products, services and experiences for a range of clients from social impact nonprofits to global corporations before dedicating her time to growing the Campfire Stories collection. She is also the founder of Amble, a sabbatical program for creative professionals to take time away with purpose in support of nature conservancies.
Dave Kyu is a socially engaged artist and writer. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in the United States, he explores the creative tensions of identity, community, and public space in his work. He has managed public arts projects for the City of Philadelphia, Mural Arts, and Asian Arts Initiative—where he currently serves as the Interim Executive Director. His own creative projects have found him commissioning skywriting planes to write messages 10,000 feet above Philadelphia and doing everything Facebook told him to do for a month.
Together, inspired by America’s beloved national parks and beloved natural spaces, they created the Campfire Stories book and card deck series—both intended to inspire deeper connections and storytelling in the outdoors.
Their two volumes of Campfire Stories: Tales from America's National Parks & Trails are a collection of stories from a diverse group of writers who share a deep appreciation of the natural world. Each book features commissioned, new, and existing works in the form of prose, poetry, folklore, and more. In 2025, they will release six new titles focused on beloved regions across the USA, including: The Adirondacks, Cape Cod, Chesapeake Bay, The Redwood Coast, San Juan Islands, and Santa Fe & Taos.
