🌟 Become an Idaho Dementia Friend: A First Step in Making Sandpoint a Dementia Friendly Place

Do you know someone living with memory loss? Come, learn how to be a confident, encouraging Idaho Dementia Friend.

What will I learn? Through interactive activities and information, you will learn what dementia is and how it affects people. Five basic concepts helpful in relating with those who live with memory loss or brain changes will be shared. By networking with others in our area, you will discover positive ways to encourage neighbors, family members and friends who are living with dementia.

It’s appropriate for those living with mild cognitive change, as well as for family caregivers, friends, and anyone in the community who wants to know how to be a Friend to residents and visitors living with dementia.

This program is used throughout Idaho to introduce participants to local resources and opportunities—so that new Dementia Friends can choose helpful next steps right here in Bonner County. A free workbook will be provided.

What is Dementia Friends Idaho? A Dementia Friend learns about dementia and then turns that understanding into action. Dementia Friends USA is part of a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. Dementia Friends USA is a nationwide initiative that equips communities to be safe, supportive places for people living with dementia. Join the movement in Sandpoint—Become an Idaho Dementia Friend.

Deni Williamson is a Sandpoint resident. For more than 10 years she was the primary family caregiver for her spouse Gary who had a rare kind of early-onset Alzheimer’s. Knowing first-hand how dementia impacts friends and families, Deni now volunteers on the Idaho Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Alliance. She is a trained Idaho Dementia Friend Champion and part of the local vision team that has established a new respite day program for adults with dementia called Sandpoint Friendship Station. She lives intergenerationally with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. An environmental educator and author, she loves propagating native plants and watching what pollinators they draw to the neighborhood.
