Ink & Watercolor Illustration Workshop

Dive into the world of mixed media and explore the creative possibilities of ink drawing and watercolor painting. Learn an array of painting and drawing techniques with @artbyacorn

Ashley Cornwall (Acorn) is an East Bay artist and art educator. Her illustrative artwork has been featured in PGH City Paper, BOLD Journey, and Voyage Magazine. Her work can currently be found in various galleries and exhibition spaces in SF. Her illustrative opportunities range from underground, independent music album cover art and being featured on established musical platforms such as Bob Weir and Joni Mitchell.

During this one day workshop, students will begin the class by brainstorming their subject item with intuitive drawing exercises. Each student will map out their final illustration idea in graphite and will be taught an array of drawing and line techniques with various ink pens.

Students will learn an assortment of watercolor painting exercises in order to achieve a unique, illustrative piece of art that captures the story of their own personal story or imagination.

Class Itinerary:

6:00- Doors open/ students can relax and check out the gallery space and stores nearby

6:30-6:40 Introductions & Seating Arrangements

6:40-7:00 Guided intuitive sketching exercises / brainstorming in graphite

7:00-7:10 composition demonstration / finalize drawings

7:10-7:30 Ink drawing demonstration / pen & ink application

7:30-7:50 Watercolor painting demonstration, creatively problem solving, refining details

7:50-8:00 Final Details

Techniques that will be shared and discussed during demonstrations:

Ink Drawing- line weight, expressive linework, controlled linework, developing drawing styles, line variation, stippling, cross hatching

Watercolor Painting- watercolor wash, dilution & building pigment, layered depth, atmospheric perspective, shading & erasing, planning negative space, intuitive background painting
