About the event

Two Truths and a Lie:
Can Facts Survive in a Disinformation Age?

About this Event

Disinformation at its core is false or misleading information created and then spread to advance policy, political, economic or ideological goals. It is sometimes used by industries, sometimes by governments, all to undermine the public good and the knowledge institutions that are crucial to a functioning democracy.

Join an all-star cast of experts on disinformation as we play a scholarly version of “Two Truths and a Lie” – with audience participation encouraged. We’ll also lead a discussion on how best to identify and combat disinformation.

This public event opens the inaugural Disinformation Summer Institute, organized by Craig Callender from UC San Diego, Jennifer Jacquet from the University of Miami, Naomi Oreskes from Harvard University, and Jevin West from the University of Washington.

Guest faculty include:

  • Ben Franta - Oxford University
  • Steven Livingston - George Washington University
  • Gerry Markowitz - The University of New York
  • Cailin O’Connor - UC Irvine
  • Robert Proctor - Stanford University
  • David Rosner - Columbia University
  • Kate Starbird - Washington University
  • Jim Weatherall - UC Irvine

This public event and subsequent institute session are supported by the Institute for Practical Ethics at UC San Diego, the Climate Social Science Network at Brown University, and the Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington.

The Disinformation Summer Institute brings together early career researchers and senior experts to share concepts, techniques, history and theories useful in studying disinformation.  Drawing upon quantitative and qualitative social science, history, philosophy of science, public health, data science and more, each day of the institute convening will combine lectures by experts, group panels and open discussion. Potential topics include: theory of disinformation, research methods, case studies, expert testimony, FOIA requests, archival research, artificial intelligence and more.
