Staithes Rocks - geology walk

As part of our 'Staithes Rocks' event at the 2025 Staithes Festival of Art and Heritage, the Earth Science Outreach UK team are offering some coastal walks.

On the Staithes Rocks geology walk we'll go from Staithes harbour to Old Nab and back, exploring the Jurassic geology that brings Earth scientists to Yorkshire from across the globe. Led by our expert guides, you’ll discover the secrets of Staithes’ stones, from Jurassic storms, and worms that turned mud into money, to why North Yorkshire is actually part of the Alps.

The walk will begin from the bottom of the steps by the slipway onto Staithes beach. We will walk approximately half a mile across the rocky foreshore east of Staithes to Old Nab. The coast here is often uneven, wet and slippery. As such, the walk is not suitable for children under 11* or people of restricted mobility. Footwear with good grip and ankle support is a must. Walking poles can be useful too.
