Staithes Rocks - fossil safari

During the 2025 Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage (Sept 13th and 14th), we - the Earth Science Outreach UK team - are inviting people to explore the area's amazing geology and heritage. We will be running Staithes Rocks events and activities on the beach in Staithes harbour, and leading afternoon walks on the coast.

If you're interested in spotting Jurassic fossils, the Staithes Rocks fossil safari is for you! As we walk across the layers of rock, each representing a different Jurassic seafloor, we'll spot ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, and some amazing trace fossils. If we're lucky, we might even spot some special specimens, such as fossil scaphopods and starfish.

The Staithes Rocks fossil safari is for people aged 6 and over, lasting around 90 minutes. We start below the slipway in Staithes Harbour (near the Staithes Harbour Commission Office on Seaton Garth, Staithes, TS13 5DH. Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/j4dWowE3GLccXAqf7; What3Words: https://what3words.com/petrified.prices.shoulders) and will then walk out onto Penny Steel to see if we can spot fossils in the rocks and shingle.

The route goes over a rocky foreshore that can be slippery and seaweed-covered. Boots with good grip and ankle support are a must, as are warm, waterproof clothing. A magnifying glass is also very useful!
