NHTA Play-in-a-day Festival Rules
The New Hampshire Theatre Alliance will be hosting our first ever “Play-In-A-Day” Festival. Teams of writers, directors, and actors will be created at random, given a prompt, and then will have 24-hours to fully produce a new five-to-ten minute play. The process will begin on Friday, August 1st at 6pm, with performances taking place on Saturday, August 2nd at 7pm. Everything will take place at the Arts Academy of New Hampshire in Salem, NH - 19 Keewaydin Drive #4, Salem, NH 03079. This event is a fundraiser for the New Hampshire Theatre Alliance. All proceeds from the event will go towards the NHTA.
The format will be as follows:
At 6pm on Friday, all participants will meet together in the theater to review the agenda and get assignments
The directors will come forward to draw the name of one of the playwrights at random, as well as a number of performers. They will then randomly select said performers.
The playwrights will come then come forward and select a prompt. The prompts will include:
Comedy or Drama
A required line that must be spoken by a character in the scene
A required prop that must be used in a meaningful way
An inspiration quote or image
The groups will then be allowed to meet and discuss the prompt. The playwrights will be provided with resumes and headshots of all their performers. When the group feels adequately prepared, they may leave for the evening. Actors should be bringing in possible options for costuming based on the discussions.
The playwrights MUST turn in the finished script meeting all the requirements no later than 7am Saturday morning.
Directors and performers must return by 7:30a Saturday morning and will be given their scripts at 8am. They will be placed in a rehearsal space which will have some basic furniture.
There will be runners who will check in with the groups periodically, and will search our stock of costumes and props for items the plays need, as well as assessing technical/design needs.
Each group will have a thirty minute period in the theater for the tech process, where the resident light and sound designers and the stage manager will work with the directors to polish the pieces.
The audience will be allowed in at 6:30p, with the performances starting at 7:00p
Everyone is expected to help with strike.
Other information:
There is a $5 participation fee for directors, playwrights, and actors.
Tickets for the public are $15. The theater seats 115 audience members and it will be general admission
All fees, tickets, and concessions income will be going fully to the New Hampshire Theatre Alliance
