Skill Builder: West African Solo and Improv Workshop

Playing a solo on your drum is a way to musically express yourself in the moment. In this workshop you'll learn the basics of solo improvisation- Where and how to start a solo, laying down a foundation, adapting to the rhythm, letting go of the fear of soloing, and how to end your solo.

Some experience helpful but not necessary.
Cost: $45
Age: 16+ years

Meet your instructor:
Dan Engebretson has been studying and playing west African djembe & dunun rhythms for 25 years. Initially learning from books and videos, he quickly transitioned to studying with teachers from Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and the U.S.

Dan started teaching a basic west African rhythms class at the WDC in January 2017. He now teaches two levels of classes, including an advanced performance group that brings high energy rhythms to audiences all around the Twin Cities.
