Homeschool families are invited to explore Historic St. Mary’s City through specially crafted workshops that combine hands-on learning with immersive experiences in our living history exhibits. Whether your child wants to try their hand at colonial chores, navigate global trade routes, or step into the world of the Yacocomico people, there’s something for every curious learner.
Work & Play in Early Maryland
Location: Tobacco Plantation | Time: 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Recommended for Ages 5 and up
What was it like to grow up in 17th-century Maryland? In this engaging session, children will discover the chores, games, and creativity of life on a frontier tobacco plantation. Participants will compare early colonial life with modern childhood while making two take-home toys: a rag doll and a board game.
Transatlantic Traders
Location: Waterfront | Time: 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Recommended for Ages 8–14
Set sail on a journey into the global economy of the 1600s! After touring Maryland Dove with a focus on trade and cargo, students will dive into an exciting role-playing game that simulates real colonial commerce. Can your young merchant secure the raw materials they need before time—and supplies—run out?
The Game of Life: Eastern Woodland Style
Location: Woodland Indian Hamlet | Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Recommended for Ages 8–14
Experience a year in the life of an Eastern Woodland community through an interactive seasonal game. From planting and harvesting to winter survival and spring diplomacy, participants will use teamwork, strategy, and bartering to earn trade tokens and navigate the arrival of European settlers in 1634.
Trade in Trades: How the Colonies Survived by Exchange
Location: Town Center | Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Recommended for Ages 7–12
What did it take to keep a colonial town running? Students will step into the shoes of a blacksmith, chandler, or tailor to complete work orders, make goods, and barter with others. This immersive activity teaches the value of trade, negotiation, and cooperation in early Maryland—and it’s a lot of fun, too!
