The University of Queensland, Saint Lucia, Australia
Led by Distinguished Professor Aileen Moreton-Robinson, the workshop is a call to action in recognition of the underrepresentation of Indigenous scholars within the Western academy. The number of Indigenous academic positions in the Australian academy remains extraordinarily low at 1.1% in 2021 (Dept. of Education, Skills and Employment). Concentrated cohorts of Indigenous academics are almost non-existent; where they do exist, they are employed in more junior ranks compared to non-Indigenous academics (Indigenous Strategy 2022-25, Universities Australia).
Accordingly, this workshop addresses the persistent burden of historical and ongoing institutional racism experienced by Indigenous students and staff, and the critical need for Indigenous early career researchers to develop survivance skills that enable them to not only persist but thrive within the academy and beyond. The thrivance skills addressed in this workshop include surviving racism in the academy, CV writing, promotion and tenure (research, teaching, service), and applying for academic jobs.
