About the event

Indigenous Futures Seminar Series
An interactive workshop to consider the critical role of how we bring family, youth, community and those outside of academia into research.

About this Event

The Indigenous Futures Centre invites Indigenous community members, staff, students and visitors, to an Interactive Workshop titled: “Our kids don’t read articles” Story and creative practice in research with and for community.

Facilitated by Associate Professor Hinekura Smith on Thursday August 21 from 11:00am to 12:30pm, this workshop calls upon and invites us to consider the critical role of how we bring family, young people, community and those outside of academia into research.

Come along and consider the power of story and creative practice, art and making as the oldest form of knowledge exchange, knowledge creation and intergenerational knowledge transmission. What possibilities exist in your research to bring story and making that is community led? Hinekura will share some of the theoretical underpinnings of her lanaguge and arts-based Kaupapa Māori (Māori centric) research experience as an a/r/tographer (artist-researcher-teacher; Rita Irwin) and educator activist including a recent successful research exhibition to disseminate a two year community driven research project that saw 30 families weave and write their qualitative research ‘data’ into traditional cloaks and ‘letters to their mokopuna (grandchildren)’ https://www.unitec.ac.nz/about-us/he-kahu-k-rero-cloaks-that-speak-matariki-exhibition
