Join PETA supporters for a peaceful demo at the Royal Oak Public Library, which is hosting Dane Baker, a musher associated with the cruel Iditarod race.
More than 150 dogs have died running the Iditarod, not counting all those who died during the off-season while chained up outside like bicycles, or those who were shot or bludgeoned to death because they lacked the rare speed and stamina to make the grade.
During this year’s Iditarod, a four-year-old pregnant dog named Ventana collapsed and died on the trail. Iditarod officials attempted to cover up a medical emergency involving a dog named Jett, and a dog named Hank fell into a freezing river and was dragged. More than 180 dogs were pulled off the trail due to exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes.
The dogs used for the Iditarod experience two extremes: being chained to plastic barrels or dilapidated wooden boxes in all weather conditions without the opportunity to socialize or exercise and being forced to race hundreds of miles until their bodies break down.
