This training helps community members understand how domestic violence (DV) and substance use are connected. It provides education, raises awareness, and offers guidance on how to support those affected.
Main Points:
• How They're Connected:
People experiencing abuse may use drugs or alcohol to cope with trauma. On the other hand, substance use can make it harder to leave an abusive situation or get help.
• How Abusers Use Substances to Control:
Some abusers pressure their partners to use drugs or alcohol, or use their partner’s substance use to shame or control them.
• Why Getting Help Can Be Hard:
Victims may feel afraid, judged, or worried about things like losing their children or being arrested. This can keep them from seeking support.
• What Support Can Look Like:
o Being kind and nonjudgmental
o Listening without blaming
o Helping someone find services that understand both DV and substance use
o Knowing where to send someone for help
