How Triangle Bikeworks Began: My Journey
This bike month, I remember when I first threw my leg over a bicycle as a kid, I had no idea how that simple machine would change not just my life, but the lives of hundreds of young people in our community. That rusty hand-me-down bike became my first taste of true freedom – a way to explore beyond my neighborhood, challenge myself, and discover what I was capable of.
Triangle Bikeworks wasn't born in a boardroom. It started with a simple question: what if every young person could experience that same sense of accomplishment and possibility that I found on two wheels? Our community had plenty of kids with potential but limited opportunities to grow beyond their immediate surroundings.
In 2011, I gathered a few bikes, a handful of eager youth, and set out on our first ride. The transformation I witnessed in those young people – watching their confidence grow with each pedal stroke – convinced me we were onto something powerful. Kids who started out saying "I can't" were soon conquering hills and planning routes through parts of town they'd never seen.
What began as weekend rides has evolved into life-changing experiences like our Spoke'n Revolutions Youth Cycling program, where young people tackle multi-day journeys while learning about civil rights, environmental justice, and their own untapped potential.
